Multiply Outreach Activity at Priory Pembroke Academy

On Thursday 6th June we visited Pembroke's Year 7 Parents Evening to set them a number challenge! Parents were invited to estimate the cost of a recommended portion size for three popular snacks (crisps, chocolate and popcorn) and decide which plate would be the cheapest if they could buy just that portion at the equivalent price. It was great to see students helping parents to judge the costs of the whole bags so that they could use those figures to estimate the portion cost. Some parents became quite competitive with each other and Mr Evans and Mr Newbold were keen to find the answer too!

The answers were:

Plate 1 - ASDA's Extra Special Crisps - One portion is 1/6th of the bag and the cost on the day for a bag was £1.35 - Plate cost = 23p

Plate 2 - Cadbury's Dairy Milk Bar - One portion is 5 squares (which didn't seem accurate!) and there were 60 squares in the block totally a cost of £4.50 - Plate cost = 38p

Plate 3 - ASDA's Sweet Popcorn - One portion is 25g and the bag, costing £1 on the day, contained 100g - Plate cost = 25p

Which means the cheapest plate was, in fact, plate 1!

Well done to everyone who tried the activity - we had 44 parents take part which was amazing! The closest estimation for the cheapest plate was from Michael H with 25p. We will be in touch with you about your prize!

Also, a special well done to:

Natash H for estimating plate 1's value correctly (you picked plate 3 as the cheapest otherwise you'd have been a joint winner!)

Gemma S for getting the cost of plate 3 spot on!

Hannah R for only being 1p out on your estimation of plate 3's cost.
