Summer HAF 2023

Updated: Apr 10

Around the world in 5 days.

This summer holiday, children from a local Primary School went on an adventure around the world; experiencing different cultures and cuisine workshops.

At the beginning of their HAF-holiday expedition children were each given a passport that they could customise and use to collect their country entry stamps in the form of stickers after completing each activity.

Tutors Andy and Kirsty took students to various corners of the globe - starting with Italy.

Kirsty’s Italian session saw children create their own salad box in the colours of the Italian flag followed by a fun activity in the playground in which children had to name fruits and vegetables of the Italian flag’s colours without repeating any that had previously been said.

In true Italian style, Andy guided the children through making their own mini pizzas. Children were able to top their pre-made dough with healthy and delicious vegetables to then be cooked in the kitchen and taken home to eat. Some children even tried new combinations by adding lemon slices!

The second day saw children experience the cuisine of India. Starting with Kirsty’s Indian inspired Market Stall, children were introduced to a shopping list activity which allowed them to learn of new and unfamilair Indian ingredients. India with Andy saw children make Phirini (a creamy, slow-cooked pudding). Children could top their delicious dessert with exotic fruits and creamy yoghurt. The session allowed everyone involved to learn new cooking skills and create something unique that they may not have tried before.

With Andy in Spain, children were able to make their own mocktails. They measured out quantities of fruit juice and mixed them together to create their own punchy mocktail. Children carefully cut up fruit which they added to their glasses before shaking and pouring over their delicious fruity drink. Kirsty’s Spanish session had children using their maths skills to engrave glasses with 100, 200 and 300ml markers before decorating them. The children took these home so that they could make their own mocktails in one glass at home.

On the penultimate day of their holiday children went to China. Learning about popular fruits and vegetables in China, Kirsty’s session had children picking up pieces of each food with chopsticks and putting them into the correct bowl that matched the whole fruit or vegetable. Splitting the group into two teams made this an interesting competition to see not only which team was more accurate but who could complete the task the fastest. All of the children got involved and enjoyed their time with Kirsty.

Fruit salad was on the menu for Andy’s Chinese session. Various exotic fruits (including those originating from other countries), were laid on the table for children to try and identify. These included dragon-fruit, lychee, pomegranate, pineapple and more. The children loved tasting different fruits and creating their own bowls to eat with Andy.

Kirsty also made ice cream with the children to accompany their fruit salads. They learnt the science of mixing salt and ice to help freeze their ice cream mixture quickly and practiced measuring their ingredients carefully using cups.

The final stop on the HAF Holiday was Mexico. Andy’s Mexican session had children making their own avocado frog inspired creations. Scooping out the flesh of half an avocado, mushing in a bowl and adding this back into the skin created the base of their frog/monster creation. Various fruits and vegetables were added to create unique and imaginative characters.

Salsa was on the menu for Kirsty’s Mexican session. Children learnt how to safely cut fruits and vegetables of their choice into small pieces and create their own delicious salsa. They then got to experience tasting their healthy creation by scooping up their salsa with tortilla chips.

By the end of their trip around the world, children had collected all of their stickers and added them to their passports.

“… there were so many different foods which they absolutely loved and this kept them engaged. The children loved collecting the stickers in their passports and enjoyed the colouring sheets that matched each activity’ - Teaching Assistant

“Always take part even if you’re scared” - Year 5 pupil.

This project inspired the children to learn new skills and try different cuisines that they may not have known about before they jetted off at the start of their HAF holiday.
